Hernia Mesh Options
Synthetic Mesh
The idea behind permanent synthetic mesh is to provide strong lasting support by covering the hernia (hole). Made from tough materials like plastics, these mesh stay in the body forever.
Pros and cons: It has been around since the 60s and offers a better repair than using sutures alone. Long term, lifelong complications can happen, such as infection and erosion.
Biologic Mesh
Biologic hernia mesh is designed to give natural support to weak tissue. The mesh materials are from animals or humans. These tissue based meshes help the body heal by blending in with your own tissues as the repair heals and grows stronger.
Pros and cons: Made up of cells familiar to your body and resistant to infections. Higher chance of hernia recurrence than with some other meshes.
Resorbable synthetic mesh
Resorbable synthetic mesh is designed to temporarily support weak tissue while it heals. These meshes are made by materials that slowly break down and are absorbed by your body as the hernia repair heals.
Pros and cons: reabsorbed over time and stands up better to infections. Recurrence rate of hernia vary depending on the mesh.
Reinforced tissue matrices
Reinforced tissue matrices are designed to combine the best parts of different types of meshes; permanent, resorbable, and biologic. They are made from natural animal tissue and are strengthened with small amounts of suture that either stay in the body or dissolve over time. They promote a natural tissue response during the healing process.
Pros and cons: A newer less tested technology that promotes natural cells to proliferate and help with the healing process.
